President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has recently defended nepotism and cronyism in public life. He expressed his unorthodox views in a town hall meeting two days ago. He did so to make it clear that public opinion on the issue doesn’t count for his administration – in other words, he has a free reign to avoid unaccountability as long as he is in-charge as the President at Villa Somalia. This isn’t a slap in the face of citizens of Somalia – for they got what they deserve in giving the reigns of power twice to Hassan Sheikh Mohamud without any lessons learned from his first stint in the Villa.
In this regard, neither late president John F. Kennedy of the United States nor former president Donald Trump was right in appointing their close relatives to important positions of government. But, each was known to have had paid a high political price for doing it. Many believe that Mohamud will suffer too for repeatedly copying their mistakes. Let us observe what happens next.
Paradoxically, Mohamud, like proverbial ostrich, tried to downplay the outstanding political differences between FGS and Puntland State. We shall see whether his approach to ignoring persisting conflicts with this FMS would make the trick in resolving serous governance difficulties in Somalia.
